Think about it we spend about one-third of our life in sleep. The amazing, recuperative effect is essential to our survival. The ultimate therapy for being tired is going to sleep, and then to dream. Most of us have had an amazing dream at one time or another, and then wondered what it meant.
The analysis of dreams by dream specialists is probably as old as dreaming itself. All humans, and various animals, dream every night, and humans have always been riveted to know what causes dreams and what they mean.

The Egyptians on the other hand thought that dreams were communications form the gods. They believed by applying the dreamers face with beer and herbs then rubbing the face with myrrh that it would guard them from the adverse effects of bad dreams.
The Egyptians also believed that anyone who had a vivid dream or a meaningful one was blessed, and was given special standing in their social order. Likewise, people who were able to understand dreams were thought to obtain these gifts directly from the gods, and they also had a special position in society.
The ancient Greeks believed that dreams were produced by the soul’s withdrawal from the body. They thought that while they slept they were in communion with the gods. Dreams were thought of as a way of obtaining knowledge and of getting away from physical suffering in times of illness.
Dream analysis was such an imperative field to the ancient Greek and Roman world that a dream analyser often went with military leaders into war as advisers.
The Chinese thought that the soul left the body every night while sleeping. They believed that if the dreamer was to be suddenly awakened that the soul would not be able to get back into the body.
Apparently some Chinese, so I’ve been told, are still wary about having alarm clocks in the house – it just shows you how superstition still has an influence on modern affairs!
Think about this! In the dark ages people believed that demons were accountable for most dreams. It was thought an immense sin by the church to have dreams.
Dreams were not allowed to be talk about. Anyone who the church thought might have had a dream faced unyielding torture or even death. The only thing the populace could do, at that time, was to pray not to dream so they could be free of demonic possession. Thank God that we don’t live in the dark ages any more.
The thing is dreams were of such a great consequence in the old days that they regularly influenced the behaviours of political and military leaders: shaping everything from the action of a battle to the outcome of a political result.
Now coming into more modern times like the 19th century the regard for dreams changed immensely. Dreams At that time were often rejected as outcomes of anxiety, the result of everyday living, or even unhealthy food and heartburn. So basically, dreams were thought of as having no meaning at all.
Until Sigmund Freud came along, and opened the gate-way for dreams to become a matter of scientific research. He dumbfounded the world of psychiatry by emphasising the importance of dreams, and he rekindled the once forgotten art of dream interpretation once more.

First Step: you will need to remember your dreams. Everyone dreams every night, but not everyone can remember them. So what you need to do is to programme yourself to remember your dreams.
Say to yourself just before going to sleep when you are lying down in your bed:
“I want to remember a dream I will remember a dream.”
Repeat this phrase at least twenty times. Then go to sleep with a note-book and pen by your bedside. When you wake up either at night or in the morning, write down what you can recall of a dream.
You must do this procedure every night until you can recall your dreams this will not take long a few days at the most. When you can easily remember your dreams you are then ready for the next step.

Step two: just before going to sleep look over a problem that can be resolved either by having advice, or some information. Remember you must really care about solving this problem, or otherwise the results will be mediocre.

Did you know that you can actually wake up in your dreams? In this lucid dream state you can solve problems. Even experience whatever you desire: like flying through the air, just as if you were doing it really.
Carl Jung said, ” In dreams we pass into the deeper and more universal truth and more eternal man, who still stands in the dusk of original night in which he himself was still the whole and the whole was in him in bright undifferentiated pure nature, free from the shackles of the ego.”
What is Lucid Dreaming?
A full lucidity dream means that you have woken up in your dream. In other words you know that you are dreaming. Your body is still a sleep, but you are able to walk about in your dream feeling your surroundings, tasting food, seeing all the bright colours and hearing all the sounds that are about you.
It’s like living another life. When you are able to achieve this state of lucidity in your dreams you can then use this new skill to work out problems, or gain new skills. One example where lucid dreaming techniques would be useful would be public speaking.
Most people are so afraid of public speaking that they would rather die than face an audience. What better way of rehearsing your speech and gaining confidence than by using lucid dreaming techniques to practise in your dreams. In the dream world you can experience many varied beginnings and endings. Remember in the waking state you only have one chance to get it right.
How to Control Dreams, Inducing Lucid Dreams
Most lucid dreams happen between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. because there is a longer period of rapid eye movement, or REM for short. REM is the rapid movement of the eyes under the eye lids. This happens when a person is actually dreaming.
The best way to learn lucid dreaming is to develop the ability to first remember your dreams. You’ll meet some people who say that they never dream. Well, everyone dreams it’s just some people are better at remembering them that’s all.
Dreams get longer as the night progresses. The first dream will usually last about 5 minutes. A few hours before waking the dreams will last longer anything up to an hour.
First step: go to bed with a note book, so you can record your dreams first thing in the morning. You’ll need your full eight hours sleep if you can because the longer you sleep the more dreams you’ll have.
Second step: before going to sleep tell yourself that you’ll remember your dreams when you wake up. You’ll find that after doing this for a few days you will easily be able to remember your dreams. Remember to write them down as soon as you wake up. You’ll be surprised on how many dreams you have in the night.
Third step: Train yourself in your waking state to ask yourself ”Am I dreaming?” Do this every 90 minutes while going about your daily business. Always answer yes to the question, “Yes I am dreaming.”
What you’re doing is anchoring, or creating a habit that will show up in the dream world. In other words you’ll remember when you’re dreaming to ask that question, and then you’ll wake up in your dream. You’ll know when you have woken up in the dream because you’ll be looking through your own eyes.

Why do we dream? Well, we dream to help us solve problems, many people have dreamt of new ideas and solutions to their problems. Also we dream to learn from past mistakes and to understand the unconscious and our feelings towards others and ourselves.
Many people use dream dictionaries to try and understand the symbols that appear in their dreams. These dictionaries are useless because different symbols mean different things to different people. If an elephant appeared in a dream the elephant would mean one thing to one Pearson and something else to another. Symbols and pictures that appear in dreams are personal and must be interpreted in that way.
If a dream is important you will see vivid imagines, or experience very strong emotions pleasant or unpleasant visions, warnings or guidance. Remember dreams come in metaphor they may have several meanings.
If you want to find the meaning to your dream find a quiet place relax the mind and body and put your faith in the higher mind to help you to understand the meaning of the dream. Then ask yourself the following questions and write the answer down.

3. How am I behaving in the dream?
4. Do I like myself in the dream?
5. What does the dream teach me about myself?
6. Have I learnt anything from the dream?
7. How can I apply what I’ve learnt to my life?
8. Does the dream resemble any part of my life?
9. Does the dream have anything to tell me about my future?
10. Write a short sentence to summarize the dream.
When answering these questions just let the mind relax. Write down whatever thought or emotions that come to mind. Always write the first impression not the second or third. The first is always the most important.
How to Control Dreams/Nightmares and Recurrent Dreams
and How to Understand Them
Nightmares aren’t there just to scare you. They are there to teach you something about yourself, or to indicate some action that needs to be done.
Strephon Kaplan-Williams says in Dreams Working (1991), ”Nightmares are incomplete dreams. They are dreams people wake themselves up from because they are not able to deal with the implications of the dream. Most often it is the dream ego itself that is under attack. Often a nightmare represents a daily circumstance or situation that the dreamer does not want to face but won’t go away without a resolution.”
Recurrent dreams are most often nightmares. Helen McLean and Abiye Cole say in their book, The Dream Working Handbook (2001), ”The fact that a dream keeps returning means that it contains a vital message that needs to be listened to. Such a dream becomes more and more exaggerated the longer it is ignored”.
Understand your nightmare, or recurrent dream:
1. Write the whole dream down. Don’t think too much about what the dream means at this point.
2. Write down the answers to these questions.
3. Has there been any change in my diet?
4. Do I have the dream every night or only after certain events?
5. Then think of what emotions were present while dreaming; what kind of fear did the dream bring up?
6. What images were the most vivid?
7. Are there any similarities in the dream to my waking life?
8. What Changes in myself that I need to make is the dream trying to tell me?
9. Can I make these changes in my life?
When answering these questions just let the mind relax. Write down whatever thoughts or emotions that comes to mind. Always write the first impression not the second or third. The first is always the most important.
