Survival Food List

So you should always be prepared because you never know when disaster will strike. So start now to plan and build up an emergency pantry with the suggested foods from the survival food list below. It will take some time to make your’ pantry fully operational.

If possible, you will want to stock up on long shelf life foods that your family usually eats and contain little salt and have plenty of nutrition. As well as foods that can serve many purposes. Also try and build up food supplies that you can barter with.

Some other things to consider when building up your emergency pantry are: it is best to store food that will not need much fuel or electricity to prepare and also foods that do not need to be refrigerated.

The following adaptable and affordable foods on this survival food list cover the main factors mentioned above as well as being the foundation of most recipes.  Also before stocking up on foods that are on your survival food list, remember any specific dietary needs you or your family may have.

The Survival Food List

1. Drinking water (purified)

Water, even though it is not food will be the most important thing on your survival food list. You will not be able to live very long without it. You will need water for drinking, sanitary needs and food preparation. So, make sure that you have plenty of water stowed away ready for any emergency as well as water purification tablets. You can store water in five gallon water containers. You can get these at a camping store. Fill with water as soon as possible.

How long will stored water last? The thing is water itself does not go bad. But if any contamination gets into it then that can make it go bad. So its shelf life depends on whether any contamination is growing in it. If you follow the following guide lines the water will be drinkable for a long time, although it will be flat tasting.

The best way to store water for long term use:

Firstly: start with clean water from your kitchen tap. Water from your kitchen tap has already been treated with sufficient chlorine to annihilate toxic pathogens.

Secondly: buy a clean safe-sealed container. A great way to store water for long term use is in BPA-free plastic receptacles. These containers have been specially manufactured for long term water storage. Remember before putting any water in containers you must make sure that they are absolutely clean first.

Thirdly: find a location for storage.

Store your water containers in a cool dark place – sunlight and heat can deteriorate the chlorine level in the water. You can also replace the water in your containers every six months or so just to be assured of its drinkability.

How much drinking water should I store?

FEMA advises on having at least three days’ supply of drinking water. Which they say should be no less than a gallon of water for each person per day. A healthy active person usually needs about half a gallon of drinking water per day.

Around 5o gallons of water would do 2 people for about a month. But this doesn’t count the water you would need for sanitation, washing and cooking ect.

2. Coffee and teas – 2-5 years shelf life: a must for any survival food list.

Coffee and tea will improve the flavour of bad tasting water. They will also improve morale and lower depression as well as providing you with a certain burst of energy.

3. Concentrated fruit juices, and also fruit cordials to add flavour to water.

4. Packaged foods: Ramen noodles, not the best food on the planet but they are very inexpensive, light-weight and easy to cook can last about 10 years and are a good addition to your survival food list.

5. Instant mash potato flakes: these are a good addition to your Survival Food List because they can last for a very long time.

6. Seeds and nuts: though it’s true that nuts can go bad quickly, at the end of the day, they are an outstanding source of energy for any short term survival situation.

But before you stock up on them make sure that no one in your’ family is allergic to them. Seeing that nuts are allergens, do not give them to children under 5 years old. Nuts to stock up on: walnuts, raw almonds, Brazil, hazelnuts, pistachios and pecans.

Also you can stock up on canned chestnuts they are a good source of fibre, magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin C.

The most nourishing seeds and nuts are in bags and not in oil filled jars and cans. You can buy alfalfa   and sunflower seeds in bags at the supermarket as well as all kinds of other nuts.

7. Canned Food: such as vegetables, fruits, soups, and liquids – shelf life 2 -5 years.

It’s essential to stock up on canned foods with a very high liquid content such as canned vegetable juice and pineapple juice. These foods will give you hydration and nutrition simultaneously.

Make sure that you only get the content and brands that you usually eat do not buy anything exotic. You do not want to eat anything that you might not like.

8. Popcorn: do not get the one you need to microwave

9. Beans: these beans, stored and sealed from oxygen can last for about 8 – 10 years. Kidney beans, lentils, pinto beans, lima beans, garbanzo beans, adzuki beans, black turtle beans, mung beans, black eye beans you can also stock up on canned beans they also have a very long shelf life of over 10 years.

Beans are easy to store and have a high protein content which makes them an essential survival food on your survival food list.

When mixed with rice (which is also excellent survival food stuff) beans form a complete protein. Which means the meal comprises all of the nine vital amino acids to support your body.

10. Crackers: they will last quite a while if stored correctly.

11. Peanut butter: peanut butter is a great immediate survival food 2-5 years shelf life. Do not buy the all-natural peanut butter as it will need refrigeration because it doesn’t have any preservatives.

12 Hard Candy: 2 – 5 years shelf life, a nice treat to have on your survival food list.

13. Pasta sauce: store in a cool dry area. Shelf life 12 – 18 months

14. White flour, whole wheat:  wheat will keep longer than flour because it is less susceptible to light, insects and changes in temperature. But you will need to invest in a small hand grinder so that you can grind it to make flour.

15. Brown or white sugar: will last indefinitely if stored properly.

16. Seasonings: salt and pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, paprika, cinnamon, taco seasoning

17. Dried and herbs: 2- 5 years shelf life.

18. Stocks: beef, chicken and vegetable stocks are always handy on your survival food list, so you can make soups or hot drinks.

19. Kitchen staples: vinegar and baking soda – they can also be used for cleaning as well as for cooking. Also stock up on some yeast and baking powder.

20. Apple Cider Vinegar: you can use it for cooking and cleaning. Also it has antibiotic properties

21. Cereals: whole grain.

22. Raw honey: as well as being a sweetener, it also has antibiotic qualities and can be used to help heal wounds so it is an useful addition to your survival food list.

A shelf life of two years is often stated on honey. But according to the National Honey Board honey can last for centuries if it is kept in a sealed jar.

Even though it doesn’t have the same nutritional content (in terms of minerals and vitamins) as other kinds of foods, it can add some additional flavour to food as well as offering some simple sugars. Honey can also be used to mend burns and wounds.

23. Plant-based oil: vegetable oil, corn oil, olive oil, coconut oil and olive oil.

Coconut oil will last longer than the other oils. It will last overt two years so it is a good addition to your survival food list. Whatever oil you buy, be sure to buy them in small cartons because as soon as you open them they start to oxidate and start to deteriorate quickly. Cooking oils will last about 2 years. You can use any oil that is near its sell by date and replace it with some fresh oil.

24. Cocoa powder: always a nice addition to your survival food list, store in a cool dry place, shelf life about one year.

Cocoa generally has a best by date which is the last day a company will guarantee for its best quality and flavour, not its safety. So that means that you can use your cocoa even after its best by date has expired.

25. Non-fat powdered milk:  2-5 years shelf life.

26. Jell-O: lasts indefinitely.

27. Whole grains: cornmeal, bulgur, barley, oats, couscous, rice, quinoa, wheat berries

28. Alcohol: vodka, whiskey, gin, rum ect: alcohol is a useful commodity to have on your survival food list.

In a survival situation you can use alcohol for more than just drinking. Some survival uses for alcohol are for hygienic and medicinal purposes: such as to calm anxiety, use as an antiseptic, to disinfect water, relieve a tooth ache, treat insect bites, to clean the skin before an injection, to treat poison ivy, clean sinuses and congestion,  to help you sleep,  to kill bad smells, use as a deodorant, mouthwash.

29. Soft grains: the following soft grains can last about 8 years if kept at 70 degrees and sealed so as not to allow any oxygen in. Barley, quinoa, oats groats and rye.

30. Hard Grains: put in storage correctly have a shelf life of about 10 – 12 years. Dry corn, hard red wheat, buckwheat, millet, spelt, durum wheat. all good stuff to put on your survival food list.

31. Basic cooking ingredients that have a long shelf life: pastas and flours 5 – 8 years if stored properly. White flour, whole wheat flour, all purpose flour, pasta, cornmeal, white rice, brown rice (Brown rice is more nutritious while white rice has a longer storage life and can keep for about 20 years).

32. Salt: even though salt will soak up moisture it still has an indefinite shelf life.

This essential mineral will be a highly prized commodity in any long term disaster situation because it will be an indispensable bartering item. You can use salt as a preservative and also use it for curing and cooking as well as for cleaning and tanning hides. A very useful commodity to have on your survival food list.

33. Hard cheeses enclosed in wax: wax enclosed hard cheeses can be hard to come across but you can find them if you look around. Edam, Gouda, Swiss, Parmesan and sharp cheddar cheeses enclosed in wax are all very good cheeses to stock up on.

The wax stops the moisture in the cheese from evaporating as well as preventing the cheese from producing bacteria and growing mould.

Wax covered cheeses can last a long time without needing to refrigerate. Powdered Parmesan will last about four months but when this hard cheese is enclosed in wax it can be edible for about 24 years or so. So wax covered cheese is a great addition to your survival food list.

34. Stock up on some multi-vitamin tablets: the human body can store up to about a month’ reserve of most vitamins, after that the body’s health will start to deteriorate if they are not replaced.

Remember in any stressful situation vitamins are more quickly used up. You need to check the manufacturer’s instructions as vitamin pills do not have an unlimited shelf life but they are important, so make sure you have them on your survival food list.

35. Canned meats and fish are a great choice of foods to have on you survival food list:  meat can provide humans with about 90% of sustenance that is needed to survive.

Also canned sardines, salmon, tuna and mackerel are full of the necessary health giving Omega 3 oils.

Shelf life 2 – 5 years, always store your canned food with the oldest at the front. You must rotate any canned food you have regularly so that the content doesn’t separate and settle.

You can always replace your food regularly with some new food and eat any that is almost past its sell by date. You do not have to stock up all in one go, just steadily build your stock up.

Take advantage of any special offers they may have at your grocery store and then buy an extra packet or can of something that you like.

“Best if used by, “Best by” and “And use by” dates on food packages that are sold in grocery stores in the United States are the manufactures estimation of how long a certain food will remain at its best quality.
